My inspiration behind The Erlqueen was the beauty of Actias luna. The moon moth originally comes from the Near Eastern areas and now can be found in the United States and Canada. These caterpillars live mainly on birch and alder leaves. Goethe’s ballad Der Erlkönig (The Erlking) and the translation by Richard Wigmore also took part in filling me with inspiration for these series. Below is a fragment of the translated text:
Father, father, can you not see
Erlking’s daughters there in the darkness?’
